'I have more or less an irresistible passion for books...' -Vincent Van Gogh
Van Gogh was passionate about painting but he also had a voracious appetite for literature. Vincent devoured books as food for his soul. The theme of books appears repeatedly in his paintings. At one point, Vincent even worked in a bookshop.
An extremely brilliant man, Van Gogh spoke four languages, English, French, Dutch and German. This ability enabled him to read books from authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Harriet Beecher Stowe. Alphonse Daudet and Charlotte Bronte. At the mental asylum in St. Remy, Vincent's thirst for literature did not wane. As he recuperated, he enthusiastically read Shakespeare's history plays.
'My God, how beautiful Shakespeare is, who else is as mysterious as he is? His language and method are like a brush trembling with ecstasy.' -Vincent Van Gogh
